    General introduction of IEC 60840 high voltage cable

    The International Electrotechnical Commission’s standard IEC 60840 references the requirements for cables and cable accessories with a voltage rating of between 30kV (Um 36kV) and 150kV (Um 170kV). The cables are of either single core or individually screened three-core cables but, as with the lower voltage standard IEC 60502, it excludes cables for special applications such as submarine and mining.

    These high voltage cables are designed for fixed installations and suitable for the primary distribution of power. These cables have an outer sheath of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) which offers a balance between abrasion resistance and flexibility.

    To achieve compliance with this international standard, the cables are subject to regular type test sequences, simulated to represent a 30 year service lifetime on a cable sample of at least 1 metre. Unlike in the IEC 60502 Part 2 testing, IEC 60840 sees voltage applied during the burner heating cycles.

This may require unusual quantities or lengths, short production lead-times and/or technically challenging constructions.

    The standard high voltage cables, which include 2XS(F)2Y, 2XS(FL)2Y, A2XS(F)2Y and A2XS(FL)2Y are designed for the primary distribution of power on networks with a voltage rating of 123kV. HV cable are triple extruded to the latest IEC standards using proprietary materials on modern catenary line equipment. They are suitable for installations providing mechanical protection to the cable. Waterblocking tape options help ensure that should the HV cable be damaged, the repair lengths and associated works are kept to a minimum. A high density polyethylene (HDPE) is used as standard and offers a compromise between abrasion resistance and flexibility, however various other options are available on request.

    The high voltage power cables contained within this datasheet are suitable for the primary distribution of power up to a maximum network voltage of 110kV. Suitable for locations where mechanical protection is afforded by other means and where the additional protection of a moisture barrier has been determined not to be necessary, see 2XS(FL)2Y and A2XS(FL)2Y. The cables are triple extruded using proprietary materials on modern catenary line equipment to the latest IEC standards. Water blocking tape options ensure that should the cable be damaged, repair lengths and associated works are kept to a minimum. The cables are provided as standard with a high density polyethylene sheath, chosen to give the best compromise between abrasion resistance and flexibility to ensure installation confidence. The range can be customised to meet specific project demands should the need arise.
